Ruthless!

Theatre Elision is quickly becoming a theater company whose shows are must-sees for me. They are musical, filled with beautiful voices, and just plain fun to watch, and Ruthless! is no exception.

I had never heard of the show before, it is a dark musical comedy with music by Matthew Laird and lyrics by Joel Paley, about a girl who kills her classmate to get a lead in the school play. Along the way it spoofs more familiar musicals such as Mame and Gypsy and is overall hilarious.

The six women in the cast hit all the right notes and also have perfect comic timing. The show directed by Lindsay Redman was able to hit just the right level of absurdity to make the show hilarious without becoming eye-rolly. At many times the show felt like an old time radio drama being preformed live on stage.

I also really loved seeing a show with such a large female creative force behind it. The entire cast is comprised of women along with the director, vocal director and stage manager. Anyone who says women are not as funny as men should come and see this show, I haven't laughed so much all year.

Ruthless! is only playing for one weekend at the Howard Conn Fine Arts Center, closing this Sunday.

If you are looking for something to lighten up your day and make you laugh, Ruthless! is the ticket for you.
